Desertification in the Sahel is a growing environmental crisis driven by a combination of climate variability and intense human pressure on fragile ecosystems. Prolonged droughts, erratic rainfall patterns, and rising temperatures have reduced the natural resilience of the land, while unsustainable practices such as land clearing, overgrazing, deforestation, and poor agricultural management continue to strip the soil of its protective vegetation cover. As plant life disappears, vast stretches of bare ground are exposed to wind and water erosion, leading to declining soil fertility, reduced agricultural productivity, and the gradual loss of biodiversity.
The effects of climate change further deepen this challenge by increasing the frequency and severity of extreme weather events, while socio-economic pressures such as population growth, poverty, and dependence on natural resources intensify the overuse of already degraded land. Together, these forces create a destructive cycle of land degradation, food insecurity, water scarcity, and environmental decline. In the Sahel, desertification is not only transforming landscapes but also threatening livelihoods, weakening local economies, and increasing the vulnerability of communities that rely heavily on the land for survival.
